Built during the 1950's the Baltic Flour Mills in Gateshead, eventually closed in 1981.
The remaining silo is being transformed into a centre for the contemporary arts; demolition of the concrete silos has left a cavernous shell which temporarily was transformed by this spectacular installation by sculptor Anish Kapoor.
The site- specific work a huge PVC membrane which was tensioned inside the gaunt shell to create a 52 metre structure that flares out at each end.
Viewed externally and internally the views are eerily different seen from outside the trumpet sucks the viewer into the crimson void, inside the full extent of the curvatious structure is revealed within the colossal roofless space.
As project manager Marc Thomas oversaw the detailed design, manufacture, and Installation within the UK and again when it was moved to Naples, Marc managed the logistics and installation.
